What’s WRONG with Seminary???

  1. Too unidirectional
  2. Too many students per instructor.

Too little ACCOUNTABILITY, both for the Professors and the students.

S.I. — Recall the son of the seminary president who was confronted because he had a girl in his room after midnight. He threatened, "DO YOU KNOW WHO MY FATHER IS!!? He will throw you out of here!"

  3. Too Authoritarian
  4. Confucianism in Korea.

Seminaries are driving the Church instead of submitting to the church.

  5. Too cumbersome (Bureaucratic)
  6. Politics!

May have begun "God’s way" but gradually turns to "man’s ways."

    Insensitive to the Holy Spirit.

    Denominational divisions (OPERATION WORLD)

Not reproducible "out in the field."

  7. Too expensive
  8. Educational debt is the most common reason that prevents people from reaching the mission field.

  9. Too academic
  10. Pride (The title of Ph.D. is considered better than Pastor!)

Too many "papers" to write; "no time to read the Bible!" (TESTIMONY)

  11. Too theoretical; neglecting intimacy with the Lord
  12. (Revelation 2:2-5, NKJV)

    2 "I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars;

3 "and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary.

4 "Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.

5 "Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place--unless you repent.

  13. Too little APPLICATION (trapped in Interpretation)
  14. (Ezekiel 33:31,32, NKJV)

31 "So they come to you as people do, they sit before you as My people, and they hear your words, but they do not do them; for with their mouth they show much love, but their hearts pursue their own gain.

32 "Indeed you are to them as a very lovely song of one who has a pleasant voice and can play well on an instrument; for they hear your words, but they do not do them.

Seminaries produce "Seminary widows" — but God designed the family to be:

    (a) the FIRST PRIORITY of ministry!

    (Ephesians 6:4, NKJV)

4 And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.

    (Deuteronomy 6:5-9, NKJV)

5 "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

6 "And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.

7 "You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.

8 "You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

9 "You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.

    (b) and the PROVING GROUND of ministry!

    (1 Timothy 3:4,5, NKJV)

4 one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence

    5 (for if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);

  15. Too isolated
  16. Too far away from the real concerns of the common man "on the street."

    Fossilized "OLD WINE SKINS."

The church has become irrelevant to young people! (TESTIMONY)

  17. Too focused on Systematic Theology instead of BIBLICAL THEOLOGY
  18. Every Christian in every culture needs to master the Inductive Bible Study method. Every culture needs to go directly to God’s Word and discover for themselves a BIBLICAL Theology. This is what missiologists refer to as being "Self-Theologizing."

  19. Too little Cross-Cultural Preparation
  20. Only 3 units of the 32 are on mission.

God Himself is a missionary God: He gave up His privileges, and became LIKE US in order to REACH US.

All Christians must be equipped for Cross-Cultural Ministry because if they only evangelize within their own ethnic groups, MOST of the WORLD will be neglected!

  21. Some mission agencies are now rejecting applicants who hold an MDiv!!

(E.G.: Greg Livingstone)

International Director of Interserve says (in Dec 2005), "Seminary is a failed training model."
