Who Mélange is
Mélange is Denae Downs and Tyler Johnson, both missionaries to the nation of Italy. Denae serves in Ferrara with her husband, David Downs, and leads worship at the Calvary Chapel church plant there. Tyler serves at Calvary Chapel Montebelluna, about two hours north of Ferrara and works with the worship ministry and CCBC Italy. They ultimately have a heart to see the nation of Italy reached for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus is the goal; music is the means.
What Mélange is
Mélange was birthed out of a mutual desire to see creativity cultured in Italy, namely within the body of Christ. Italy is a country where original, God-glorifying music is almost nonexistent. So, the vision is to see more and more Jesus music produced in the Italian language and to inspire people to think outside of the box that Christian music is so often limited to.
What "Initiative One" is
This EP was birthed out of the conviction that we weren't being faithful in using the gifts of music the Lord had given us, and the desire to be obedient in stirring up those gifts. There are two hymns and three original songs on the record. The EP’s five songs are in English as well as Italian, with the hope of connecting to the body in Italy and America and connecting both bodies to each other.
Lyrically, the record speaks of the daily surrender and subsequent peace that is experienced in one’s walk with Jesus. This is really a set of prayers, seeking the life Jesus gives and remembering the truths of who He is.
Musically, we wanted to push the limits outside of the norm. Mélange means "mixture" or "medley." In Italy, the culture has a strong sense of, "This is how it's always been, so there is no other way. Why change?" So, there is little innovation creatively or otherwise. This being said, it is important to us to communicate that it is good to think outside of the box, and not be held to normal stylistic guidelines.
The EP has a strong electronic vibe mixed with organic elements, which results in a very non-conventional feel. The EP has no live drums and only one appearance of an acoustic guitar, much use of vocal samples, vocoders, synths, and we used ambient sound to fill the spaces.
