People often wonder what eternal life is like. What will we do in eternity and where will we be? When Jesus prayed for His disciples, He told us plainly what eternal life is. He said, “This is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent” (John 17:3). While we think eternal life begins after we cross the threshold of death, it actually begins when we discover God and know Him. We experience eternal life when we walk with Jesus and grow in our relationship with Him.
Eternity Now is a devotionary (daily devotional and commentary) that helps you experience eternal life as you embark on a journey with Jesus through Paul’s letter to the Philippians. It begins at 1:1 and systematically walks through the four chapters to offer daily inspiration and practical wisdom to help you experience eternity now.
The following is an excerpt from Chapter 1:
“… filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.” Philippians 1:11
“The apostle prayed that believers would be filled with the fruit of righteousness. Fruit stemming from righteousness is the result of intimate communion with Jesus. Paul described this fruit nine ways (Galatians 5:22-23). The first three (love, joy, peace) are sourced in God and come from abiding in Christ. The second set of three (patience, kindness, goodness) are the outgrowth of the first three. And the final set (faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control) are manifested in the person walking in step with the Spirit.
“You can identify a tree by its fruit. You know an apple tree when you see apples. When the fruit of righteousness is evident in your life, you will become unique and pleasant amidst the world’s gardens. Not poison ivy, thorns or thistles, but a tree offering substance and nourishment, a tree offering life. In an urban metropolis or desert wasteland, a lush fruit filled tree is an oasis.
“Fruit is meant to be picked and eaten by others. It’s not for personal consumption. An apple tree does not eat its apples. Which means we’ve been strategically planted by God in our respective communities to offer life-changing fruit to those who are hungry. And as long as we remain in communion with Christ, like a branch connected to the vine, fruit will be available for people to enjoy. To the glory and praise of God.“
